Chapter 3
The car’s interior was dark and cramped. The man sitting in the driver’s seat never once looked back at me.
I kept thanking him, but he didn’t say another
Just as I was about to get out, I heard him say, “Sophia, you have other options besides Adrian.
“When you’ve made up your mind, come find me.”
He handed over a gold–embossed business card. I accepted it with both hands, thanking him repeatedly
But my mind was completely focused on my mother, so I barely glanced at it before stuffing it into my pocket.
I stumbled into the hospital emergency room. Before I could even ask, I saw nurses wheeling someone covered with a white sheet out of the operating room.
“Has Julia’s family arrived yet?”
“She’s already dead, and her daughter still isn’t here. Unbelievable.”
Two nurses gossiped, their few words easily piercing my heart.
I rushed over and lifted the white sheet. That once–refined face was now covered in injuries, with wounds of all sizes across her body and legs.
Because of Adrian, I resented her every minute of these past ten years.
I even had vicious thoughts about the whole family dying, but now that

she was truly dead before me, I felt nothing but heartache.

Since there were no relatives left at home, no funeral arrangements were needed.
I sat by my father’s bedside for a while, telling him about mom and about my situation.
I spoke intermittently until dawn. Before leaving, I looked at my father, unchanged these ten years, and spoke with a choked voice. “Dad, I’m tired.”
Early the next morning, they cremated my mother’s body. I put the urn in a box and brought it home.
In addition to that, I brought back the divorce papers that I had someone else draft.
As soon as I entered, I ran into Adrian, and his women were sitting at the dining table, laughing together.
“Just sign these.”
spoke coldly, slamming the divorce agreement onto the table.
“So you ran away overnight just to get divorce papers?
“Sophia, you’ve really gone too far!”
I clutched the urn tightly to my chest, keeping my head down.
“Adrian, let’s set each other free.
“I don’t love you anymore.”
In the past, I would argue with Adrian, and when things got heated, we’d even get physical.

I would point at his nose and demand to know if his declarations of love back then were just jokes.
“Most of the time, I still held onto a glimmer of hope that he would forgive me, that we could work on our marriage.”
When he said he liked wild women, I learned to please him in bed.
When he said he liked innocent ones, I’d wear the clothes he loved to make him happy.
But as one woman after another moved in, my heart gradually grew quiet.
Those tricks to please him became my shame and his outlet to humiliate
- me.
“Sophia, what’s this that fell out…
“Ethan?”
Violet picked up the business card I dropped and read out the name.
So it was Ethan Harrington.
Adrian’s lifelong nemesis was that rival across the ocean he’d never met. The next second, Adrian’s face darkened as he slapped me across the face.
“Is that why you don’t love me anymore–because you found someone else!?
“Do you know who Ethan is?”
My ears rang thunderously. I could barely stand, and the urn in my hands cracked open.
Watching the ashes scattered in the air, I stood there completely frozen.

I instinctively knelt down, trying to gather the ashes back together.
But no matter how I tried to collect them, it was useless.
Violet grabbed a nearby carton of milk and poured it onto the floor. The others followed her example, pouring their drinks as well.
The ashes quickly turned into sticky lumps.
“Ah!”
At that moment, I snapped. Like a madwoman, I lifted a chair and smashed it toward Violet.
Before Adrian could react, Violet was already on the floor holding her head.
“Adrian…
“It hurts so much.”
Someone called an ambulance. Adrian grabbed my hand and made me wait at the hospital.
“If anything happens to her, you’ll pay with your life!”
