Chapter 5
The pain made Riley open her eyes. She was back at the Kane house.
Adrian was sitting right by her bed, staring at her with dark eyes. “What did you mean about getting out of here?”
Riley’s heart jumped. She forced her hoarse voice to sound confused. “Getting out? What are you talking about? I was totally delirious with the fever…. probably just rambling…”
Adrian studied her for a long moment, then seemed to buy it and let go of her hand. “Why didn’t you tell me you were on your period? And then staying in that freezing water for so long.”
Riley managed a weak smile. “If dunking me in there meant Elena would forgive you, I wasn’t gonna say anything.”
Adrian’s face got all complicated, and he asked again, “Are you really that into me?”
Riley looked down.
She wasn’t into him.
She was just keeping the family deal from falling apart. Once Ivy got back, she could finally bail and never look back.
The door suddenly burst open and Elena walked in. “Adrian, when are we leaving for that fishing trip?”
She saw Riley was awake and put on this surprised look. “Oh my god, Riley! Are you okay?”
Before Riley could answer, Elena smiled sweetly. “I was just being a total bitch earlier when I made Adrian do that. I had no idea he’d actually throw you in that frozen lake. I feel so bad.”
“I heard you donated blood for me? Why don’t you come fishing with us? Consider it my way of making it up to you.”
Riley was about to say no when Elena already grabbed her hand all buddy–buddy. “Don’t say no! I already talked to Adrian about it.”
Adrian shot Riley a look that basically said ‘don’t ruin this.‘
Riley had no choice but to nod.
On the luxury yacht, the ocean breeze had that salty bite to it.
Elena was practically attached to Adrian’s hip the whole time–giggling while he fed her fruit, rubbing sunscreen on her, even making him give her piggyback rides so she could “see the view better“…
Riley stood on the deck quietly watching the horizon, like none of it had anything to do with her.
Only when Adrian walked off to take a phone call did Elena come over.
“You know what? I seriously don’t get you,” Elena said randomly.
Riley glanced at her.
Elena’s eyes narrowed. “Everyone’s always saying how obsessed you are with Adrian, how you’d do literally anything for him. But if you love someone, shouldn’t you be jealous as hell?”
“I totally screwed you over and made you apologize–you didn’t even blink. He threw you in a freezing lake–nothing. Hell, you’re watching me crawl all over your husband right now and you’re just… standing there.”
She stepped closer, lowering her voice. “So what’s the deal? Are you actually into him or what?”

Riley almost smirked. Elena wasn’t wrong–she really didn’t give a shit about Adrian.
But before she could answer, this huge wave came crashing over the yacht!

“AHHH–1″
They both lost their footing and went flying straight into the ocean!
The freezing ocean swallowed them whole. The yacht’s sharp metal edge iore long gashes down their arms, and blood started spreading through the water like red ink.
“Man overboard! Somebody help them!”
Everyone on deck lost their minds. The rescue guy dove in but popped back up real quick, looking freaked out. “Mr. Kane, that blood’s gonna bring sharks–and they’re drifting in opposite directions! We can only grab one person at a time!”
Adrian went dead pale, his eyes darting across the water like crazy.

Elena was on one side, totally losing it and flailing around. Riley was on the other, getting dragged further out by the current…
“Get Elena!” He basically screamed it.
Riley heard him just as another wave of nasty saltwater hit her throat.
She watched the diver swim toward Elena, saw Adrian’s face twisted with panic, and just smiled this sad little smile before letting her eyes drift shut.
She should’ve seen this coming.
To him, she was always gonna be the disposable one.
Saltwater flooded her lungs and everything started going fuzzy.
Through the haze, she saw this dark shape rushing toward her.
A shark!
THE
Sharp, brutal pain shot through her leg, and the last thing she saw was that crystal blue water slowly turning red with blood…
