Chapter 4
“Someone reported domestic violence at this location. We need everyone to cooperate with our investigation,” the officer said, stepping forward and showing his badge.
But Jaiden showed no intention of letting me go, and even his panic was fleeting.
He said, “Officer, there must be some mistake. My wife and I just had a little disagreement, but we’ll work it out soon. There’s no domestic violence here.”
His mind, however, never stopped calculating.
“The bruises on Ellie’s body are all in the most private places. I don’t believe she’d dare strip naked in public to show evidence.”
Seeing me frozen in place, the officer looked at me somewhat helplessly, hoping I could provide some evidence.
The crowd of onlookers began to stir.
“Officer, she’s fooling you! This woman is mentally ill–how could he possibly abuse her?”
“This woman is so ungrateful. She has such a wonderful
husband and doesn’t know how to appreciate him, just causing trouble all day long.”

Layla also stepped forward to speak for Jaiden: “I’m this woman’s family member, and we can all vouch for Jaiden. Today’s incident is absolutely a misunderstanding.”

Grace grabbed my arm: “You need to apologize to Jaiden right now! Don’t you dare cause such a scene again!”
I was so anxious I couldn’t speak, desperately trying to explain, but found that nothing I said seemed to carry any weight.
The officer looked at me with growing impatience, even seeming ready to leave.
Jaiden smiled even more smugly, pulling me by the shoulder.
He said to the officer, “Sorry to bother you. If there’s nothing else, we’ll be going now.”
His tone was gentle, but his mind was cursing viciously: “Since they can’t prove domestic violence, let’s see how you escape from my grasp this time! Once the police leave, you’ll never have another chance to get away!”
His words sent a shock through my entire body, as if I had suddenly awakened.
I summoned all my strength and shouted at the officer:
“Jaiden’s crimes aren’t just domestic violence! He also illegally switched test tube embryos!”

Jaiden’s face turned pale: “What are you babbling about? What evidence do you have? Honey, please stop making a scene.”
Layla also cried pitifully: “Ellie, how can you frame me like this? You’re breaking my heart!”
I watched them perform quietly, step by step backing toward the car and retrieving a toolbox from inside.
Jaiden’s previously composed expression instantly crumbled, and he screamed at me like a madman: “Put that thing down right now! Do you have a death wish? If you dare open it, I’ll…”
Then the toolbox opened in my hands for everyone to see.
The crowd surged forward, and Layla screamed hysterically.
She knew better than anyone that once the contents of the box were exposed, her reputation would be completely ruined.
After all, a woman who had secret meetings with her sister’s husband and took nude photos–her reputation would be destroyed for life.
Her eyes were red, her lips trembling: “How did you find out? Did you discover this long ago and deliberately choose today to reveal it? Why are you so vicious?”

But they didn’t know that all these secrets came from Jaiden’s thoughts that I could hear.
In fact, from Jaiden’s thoughts, I learned even more sordid details about them.
It turned out they had met on the day Jaiden and I got engaged.
While Jaiden was planning our wedding with me, he was secretly contacting Layla.
Within just a few months, the two had gotten involved.
Even on my wedding day, Jaiden claimed he wasn’t feeling well but secretly went out to spend the night with Layla until dawn.
I had known Jaiden for eight whole years, yet it couldn’t compare to his few months of having an affair with Layla.
He had countless times proposed to Layla that he wanted to break up with me and marry her, but she always refused with
various excuses.
Only now did I realize that Layla had been scheming for my unborn child all along.
