Chapter 2
After resting at the sanatorium for half a month, my body had just barely recovered.
During that time, Blake never contacted me again–aside from a single phone call at the beginning.
As the day I had arranged with my mother drew closer, I forced myself to return to the pack house to gather my things, even though I was still weak.
But when I opened the door, I saw Blake throwing a party with his friends.
Everyone froze when they saw me.
There was a flicker of surprise on Blake’s face. He stepped forward instinctively, frowning as he spoke.
“Jenna, I tried reaching you. Why didn’t you respond?”
My gaze, however, landed on the girl he had been shielding. It was his first love–Lindsey.
The moment Blake noticed me staring at her, he rubbed his nose awkwardly.
“Lindsey came back to the pack earlier than expected. Since I just had surgery and couldn’t throw a big celebration, we’re just having a small welcome party here at home.”
He looked back up at me, irritation rising in his expression.
“You’re not going to sulk over something so trivial, are you?”
I clutched the hem of my shirt.
In the five years that Blake and I had been mated, I had always cared too much about his past with Lindsey. Every time I heard her name, I would get upset and ask him who mattered more to him.
But now,
that question meant nothing to me.
I nodded calmly.
“Welcome back. Go ahead and enjoy yourselves. I’m just here to grab a few things.”
My attitude make Blake’s frown deepened.
He had always liked bringing up Lindsey around me, just to watch me break down, to see me lose my composure in jealousy and heartbreak.
But now, I was far too calm.
Just as I turned to leave, Lindsey’s pitiful voice rang out.
“Jenna, I’ve already let go of what happened back then. Why are you still so cold to me?”
“Why don’t you stay and celebrate with us?”
Blake couldn’t stand to see Lindsey upset. The moment she said that, he rushed over, grabbed my arm, and forced me to sit down beside the table.
“She already said she doesn’t blame you. Stop moping around and get your ass over here to hang out with her!”
As soon as I sat down, his friends crowded around.
“To show your sincerity, come on, Jenna–dry the whisky!”
Looking at their smug, mocking faces, I let out a cold laugh inside.
They knew perfectly well that I had just undergone surgery, and they still handed me alcohol. Did they really think that wasn’t going too far?
The pathetic part was that I used to believe their smiles were genuine, that they were truly happy.
I pushed the glass away.
“The pack doctor said I can’t drink right now.”
“It’s just a little! It won’t hurt!”
Without waiting for my response, several of them grabbed my arms and forced the liquor down my throat.
I choked violently, coughing uncontrollably as I stumbled back, only to be shoved forward. My face crashed straight into the cake on the table.
Sticky cream instantly flooded my nose and mouth. The sudden suffocation made me panic as a wave of laughter erupted around me.

When I finally managed to crawl back up, my face was soaked and stinging with pain.
Blinking through the cream, I saw a row of sharp steel nails embedded inside what should have been a soft, fluffy cake.
Lindsey doubled over in laughter, barely able to stand.
One of the pack members looked at me without a trace of guilt.
“Sorry, Jenna. The cream was too soft, so I asked the bakery to put something in it to keep its shape. How was I supposed to know you’d be greedy enough to slam your whole face in it?”
Someone muttered, “Like a pig,” and the rest of them burst into howling laughter again.
I knew exactly why they were doing this.
They all looked down on me now because I couldn’t shift–because I had lost half of my werewolf power. To them, I wasn’t a real wolf anymore. I was just a joke, someone they could all gang up on and humiliate.
I wiped the cream from my face and held back the rising anger. I turned to leave.
But Lindsey wasn’t done with me yet.
She grabbed a fistful of my hair, her eyes gleaming with vicious glee as she waved the others over.
“Jenna’s upset. Let’s help her clean up, so she won’t go whining to Blake again.”
The others laughed and came at me, their expressions twisted with excitement. A cold, creeping fear rose in my heart.
When I was a child, I had been kidnapped by a rogue. Because I wouldn’t stop crying, they’d held my head underwater. I had nearly drowned.
Ever since, I’d had an overwhelming fear of water.
But no matter how hard I struggled, Lindsey shoved me into the kitchen.
They shoved my head into the sink, and cold water crashed down on me. I screamed and cried, but they tied my hands behind my back, laughing
cruelly.
“We need to scrub you clean! A filthy woman like you doesn’t belong here. You’re not even worthy of being called a werewolf!”
I couldn’t breathe. The prolonged suffocation blurred my vision.
Just as I was about to pass out, Blake finally spoke from where he had been watching all along.
“Enough! Stop it–now!”
His roar immediately brought everything to a halt. The others quickly let me go.
Blake walked over and gently lifted my soaked hair away from my face.
“I’m sorry, babe. You must’ve been terrified.‘
But I quietly pushed his hand away. My voice was hoarse as I said, “I’m fine.”
Ignoring the pain that flickered across his face, I turned and went back to my room.
