Chapter 5
This man was NYC’s business legend, a major player everyone knew.[]
The business empire behind him could crush the entire Langford family without breaking a sweat.[]
The doorway light was cut by his tall silhouette.[]
He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, his posture commanding.
His gaze swept across everyone in the room before finally landing on me.[]
There was something barely detectable in his eyes–affection and heartache.[]
“M–Mr. D’Arcy? What are you doing here?” Harrison Langford immediately stood up to greet him.[]
The entire Langford family fell silent, holding their breath.]
Not just because of what Silas D’Arcy had said, but because of who he was.[]
Everyone knew his power. One word from him could obliterate the so–called Langford empire.
“Uncle…” I whispered, dazed.[]
Nobody knew that Silas D’Arcy was my uncle.[]
Silas had gotten lost as a child and ended up in an orphanage.[]
My grandparents adopted him.[]
When I was five, he was only sixteen.[]
That’s when the D’Arcy family found him and brought him back to claim his birthright.[]
After that, we rarely saw my uncle anymore.[]
Grandpa forbade us from contacting him.[]
Later we moved, and we lost touch completely.[]
Mom would mention this uncle sometimes, always with sadness in her voice.[]
She’d tell me that we and uncle lived in different worlds now, that our statuses were too far apart.[]
But I remembered how good he’d been to me.[]
He’d put me on his shoulders and give me piggyback rides…
Silas ignored Harrison completely and walked straight to me.[]
Chapter 5
He bent down to pick up the death certificate from the floor, his fingers trembling.
Mirena realized something was wrong and quietly slipped toward the back of the crowd.[]
“Eleanor Whitmore was my sister. Of course I attended her funeral.“]]
Silas’s voice wasn’t loud, but it carried clearly through the entire room.]]
Grayson’s face went white as a sheet. He whipped around to stare at me, his eyes full of disbelief.[]
But he still tried to stay calm. “Mr. D’Arcy, are you… are you sure you have the right person? How could my mother–in–law be your sister? And how could she be dead?“]
Silas’s eyes reddened, and when his gaze fell on Grayson, it turned ice cold.]]
I could see the towering hatred in my uncle’s eyes.]
“Are you saying I’m lying?“[]
All the color drained from Grayson’s face.]]
Harrison immediately started apologizing profusely.[]
“This doesn’t make sense…” Grayson muttered to himself.]]
His eyes moved between Silas’s composed face and my numb expression.[]
“Your mom didn’t have a heart condition. She clearly…“[]
“Clearly should have died in that fire to make room for a stuffed animal, right?“]
I cut him off, my voice dripping with sarcasm.[]
Grayson looked up, stunned. “That’s not what I meant.“]]
But Mirena started screaming. “Grayson! She planned this! She must’ve known Mr. D’Arcy would come. This is all an act!“]
She lunged at me, trying to scratch my face, but Silas’s bodyguards stopped her.[]
Silas looked coldly at Mirena and pulled out a stack of photos from his briefcase.[]
“These are surveillance photos of Miss Voss hiring a body double three days ago.“]]
The photos showed Mirena in a coffee shop, sitting across from a woman who looked remarkably like my mother in build and appearance.
The money passing was obvious.[]
The video had background noise and Mirena’s voice was too quiet to make out what she was saying, but the images spoke for themselves.
The room fell dead silent.]

Everyone’s eyes changed completely as they looked at Mirena.[]
I clenched my fists and avoided my uncle’s gaze.]
Grayson stared at the photos, then looked at me.]
His eyes were churning with disbelief and a trace of regret.]]
He tried to say something, but Silas cut him off. “Your family’s got some nerve.“[]
