The doctor pressed a few spots, her expression a bit serious. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous inside. “Don’t be afraid. Declan held my shoulder, and I paused, exhaling slightly. “Doctor, is it serious?” My voice trembled uncontrollably as I spoke. The hand on my shoulder tightened a bit. Declan followed up, “Don’t scare yourself. If it gets bad, we’ll do surgery.”
Soon, the doctor looked at us and smiled. “You must have just gotten married, right? Seeing how worried your husband is, I could tell.” “There’s no big issue, just make sure to rest.” For a moment, the atmosphere was a bit awkward, neither Declan nor I said anything. “No wonder you called me so late, asking for a female doctor for the patient’s family member!” “I get it, you young folks care about this stuff.”
Seeing the doctor getting more and more mistaken, I hurriedly clarified, “No, no, you misunderstood, he’s not my hus… husband.” “He’s my brother.”
The hand on my shoulder instantly dropped, and Declan’s face didn’t look too pleased. Was he blaming me for not giving him face? Without a word, he turned and left. After thanking the doctor, I got up to follow him. Declan’s long strides were three steps to my one, how could I keep up? I glanced at his back and quickly looked away. I couldn’t understand what he was sulking about. Shouldn’t I be the one who’s mad?
It wasn’t long before Declan’s car pulled up, he rolled down the window and gave me a cool look, “Get in.” I hesitated for a while, then opened the door to the back seat. Declan’s face darkened, and he clenched his jaw, “Adeline, what do you take me for, your driver?” His words brought back memories of our past. Before, the passenger seat was always mine. He always carried tissues, and wore the hair tie I gave him on his wrist, even though it didn’t match him at all.
“No, I see you as my brother.” I replied calmly. Declan laughed out of frustration, flooring the gas pedal, almost giving me a heart attack. “Declan, you’re crazy!” The car slowed down a bit, and Declan tapped the steering wheel with his finger, “Oh, you’re not calling me brother now? Weren’t you calling me that earlier tonight? Go on, call me.” He looked at me through the rearview mirror. After a moment of stalemate, it ended with him turning on a song.
